I got this Speared Bison Error from a friend of mine in Denver approaching 15 years ago. He got quite a bunch of raw Bisons by driving down to Texas when they were discovered. Many of the coins were walked into ICG in Denver for grading. This one was sent in to be graded by NGC. We actually had very good luck crossing these coins over to PCGS slabs in the same grade.

Our experience showed that the best results were if you cracked the coins out before submitting them. We kept records of how they crossed over to PCGS, and they held grades very nicely. This coin was graded originally graded by ICG, and cracked out by my friend and sent to NGC.

It came back as a 65. Since it looked so good with this stage of amber toning, Diane and I put it in an Intercept Shield a decade ago to keep it from toning further, and that seems to have worked pretty well. This Speared Bison has great eye appeal! Since there are only around 1,000 of these coins in existence, it is not that easy to find them in auctions. Also, the spear close up photo is Courtesy of Pamela Ryman-Moir....
