1917-d Buffalo Nickel

This is a 1917-D Buffalo Nickel in XF condition. Lange author of THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO BUFFALO NICKELS; Nearly all seen (1917-D's) suffer from POOR detail definition. This is due in large part to the die erosion described for 1917-P. For the D-mint, however, it is much more severe, extending into the recesses of the dies instead of merely affecting the fields. Obverse has strong detail w/ a weak central area, which is common for year and mint. Areas of die erosion, are shown. Peripheral weakness above LIBERTY and below 19 of date.

Reverse has fine detail w/ weakness in the center and light wear on high points. Full horn and tail end w/ die erosion on hip, upper thigh, and upper legs of Buffalo.

Also, die erosion on lower belly of Bison, areas around rim, and below UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Peripheral weakness above TED in UNITED; opposite side of the 19 of date on obverse. Letters of US of A, EPU, and FIVE CENTS are strong. Noticeable die crack from dot between D in UNITED and 1st S in STATES down through upper shoulder of Bison to back of head, as shown.

In addition, an example of a Crescentic rim cud is pictured on a 1915-D Lincoln Cent for a visual comparison. Red Book value for 1917-D for AU-175 and Low Unc.
