Originally called "Pile of Bones" because of the massive heaps of bison remains left by Indigenous hunters and early settlers, the site was renamed Regina (Latin for "Queen") in honor of Queen Victoria. It quickly grew into the capital of Saskatchewan and headquarters of the North-West Mounted Police (now the RCMP). One hundred years later the Royal Canadian Mint celebrated that founding with this dramatic design.
