Wonderful single bookend of a majestic American Bison as designed, and signed, by artist Paul Herzel. Bronze-clad, a manufacturing process by which a skin of bronze was deposited on a plaster form through electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel, and heft of solid bronze yet were affordable by the middle class. One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze, operating in NYC in the 1920's. The mark "169" found on the side of the base correlates to the stock number in my original Pompeian Bronze catalogue. I've included a picture of that catalogue entry.

Pompeian made a somewhat similar pair, though of American Buffalo, stock number 53. I've included a screen-shot of those results, which includes a photo and description of the pieces. NOTICE THAT THEY ARE SMALLER THAN MY BISON.

I find no indication they were designed by Herzel. No breaks in the cladding, nothing dented or mashed. The piece sits flat and stable. 5 1/2 inches tall; 6 3/4 inches long; 2 inches wide. It weighs 2 1/2 pounds. Perfect gift for the collector of things reminiscent of the American West.
