Throughout the last decade, I have been blessed to have the opportunity of purchasing Wild Yellowstone Bison Robes from the Confederated Salish & Kootenai tribe-here in Northwest Montana. I personally handle each one of these amazing animals through every part of the complex 6 month process. Folks call me picky-I insist that I just have standards-to the animal. These once near extinct animals that roamed the great plains for ten thousand years deserve the utmost in respect. Being one of the only mammals known to support entire races of indigenous peoples-mother nature couldn't have designed a better insulated or decorated pelt if the creator had tried.
To me, Im giving the Bison a second chance at coming back- and allowing a human to use him for security, history, medicine, and company. Their presence is felt immediately after you receive your box. My robes are tanned to order and are completely brand new when you pull them out of the box. The photos you see-are your New piece of ART.
If you think they look good here-wait until you see them after their final shampooing and tedious brushing, ruffing and trimming. These final steps-take around 5 days.
They like to breathe-as you will see once you remove and place amongst your home. No wondering how old the dressing on the blanket, or who else has cuddled your robe here. Bison are like sponges-they will have that new car-hand made leather aroma when they arrive from me- but will smell like your home and you after awhile. I intend after dedicating my life to labor on these incredible robes-to be wrapped up tightly after I pass like a burrito and placed in the makers soil.
Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside- already. Yellowstone Bison have a silkier, cleaner-more dense hair than domestic Bison.
Many say the Yellowstone strain is the purist in the world. Over the years I have seen how each one of these animals is an individual. You can't imagine the Wild adventures and survival each one has been through. These incidents are placed in their skin as reminders as to their great Will to survive.
These robes are not just one of a kind art, but can also be used utilitarian style. Stay warm in a blizzard, use one as camouflage, dress up your home with a touch of the west, or throw one on your bed as a top comforter (I have the most intense dreams when I sleep under mine, maybe because it's so warm:) Each of these wild robes is so individual in characteristics-that there is no stock photos or description that I can use. I've been told they are one of the greatest gifts that can be given.
The sun wasn't cooperating for pictures today -along with the slight drizzle. These pictures dont do justice! This particular robe was taken from a 1-2 year old bull and was harvested by a tribal member in late January near Gardiner, MT. 95% prime super silky winter hair. The colors on this bull scream Majestic! These wild blankets are just plum full of Caramels, Cocoa's, Gold, Blonde, and Black edges. This guy is very golden/chocolate! The contrast of colors from head to tail are stunning! Soft and supple-mid winter dressed-natural dark Gold/Tan leather with amazing suede.
Large piece of immaculate Picaso type leather Artistry. I've already spent hours brushing the Sage and Pine pitch out of its thick strains-with many days to go before completion.
The robe measures 77" long by 69"wide, making it around 37' sq. There is numerous holes made by the hunter-that have not been hand sewn. Most are around the edges-leaving the center leather very clean. There's assorted scattered natural scars in the hair and leather but they don't detract-but add to the genuiness of the blankets origin I feel. This is just the right size ergonomically- to fit many applications. Small enough to pack anywhere, but large enough to cover a queen sized bed.
These young bulls have the outstanding color variations-coupled with the young ultra silky hair. The future availability of these from Yellowstone to tribal members is not known. This robe is an impressive blanket by anyones standards-No disappointments-guaranteed!
