They are not predictable, and you can be seriously injured. This picture was taken with a long telephoto lens. After several years of coming home disappointed with my wildlife shots in places like Yellowstone, I decided to invest in myself by purchasing a 500 mm f/4 telephoto lens. This picture is one of the first shots I ever took with that lens. I still remember the day. It was an early October day. I traveled out to Yellowstone with a photographer friend; we were driving from Tower Junction toward Hayden Valley. A few miles past Canyon Village, just at the north side of Hayden Valley, we came across a herd of bison. "Let's stop at the next pull-off, " I said to my friend who was driving. You see one bison, you've seen them all. Like many of us who are frequent visitors to the park, he had grown a bit impatient with'bison jams. But, on this day, armed with my newest piece of photography gear, I was looking for something unique.

We pulled off, and our luck with light was quite good. The morning sun was behind us as we faced the herd. We had parked on the west side of the road (driving south) and the herd was mostly about 500 yards west of us. The 500 mm lens (and 1.4x teleconverter) mounted on my camera made the rig just a bit too heavy to hand-hold, so I also mounted the camera and lens to my tripod. I probably took a few hundred shots that morning - some were single bison, some were small groups, a few had mom and baby in the frame.

When the light is right and the subject is right, I will take as many shots as I have time for. After packing my gear in the back of the rental car my friend took zero pictures! , we continued our drive down through Hayden Valley. I thought through the images I had seen in my lens, but none really stood out at that time, but I knew there would be several with potential to sell in my gallery store. Later that night, back at the lodge, I quickly browsed through my shots from the day, but again nothing stood out, which often happens when I'm using a laptop-size screen to view my pictures. Once I got back home and took some time to slowly browse through the shots from that day, this magical shot called my name! I only wish I had been thinking like an artist that day.

Had I done that back then, I would not have cut off the tips of the horns! Not to worry, if that happens to you just tell everyone you planned it that way! To me, there is something haunting about this old, gray-bearded bison in Hayden Valley.

It's as if he is looking into my soul as though he can teach me something. Perhaps he did look into my soul, telling me Pay more attention to the composition, Larry. Think like an artist, not a photographer! I hope you have enjoyed this story about a "Graybeard Bison in Yellowstone" as much as I have enjoyed sharing it with you. To get great shots like this one, you simply must be there, at the right time, in the right light, with the right preparation.
